Capstone Research Project

Capstone Research Project offers an opportunity for high achieving middle and high school students to be work with Scientist/Researchers from prominent Universities to learn how to do independent research, participate in course work that prepares them for science competitions, college prep which can lead to publication.

Who should apply: Motivated Middle and High School students who are interested in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Biomedical Sciences. No prior research experience is required. This program is offered both as a hybrid program( online course, zoom mentorship and field trips) or as a virtual program (online course, zoom mentorship, independent field work with guidance).

What is the Capstone Research Program?

The Capstone Research Program is for highly motivated Middle and High School students who are interested in becoming innovators and problem solvers; with the ultimate goal of becoming Scientists, Engineers, Physician-Scientists, Research Scholars. Students will be enrolled in two courses that involve independent reading, course work, literature review and face to face/ online meetings.

Each Middle School/High School Scholar will work with at least two experts:

(1) Mentor who will work with the student with a focus on instrumentation techniques, data collection, data analysis and reviewing the research paper.

(2) Tutor/Mentor who will engage in personalized scientific mentoring, teach two courses: (a) research methodology and (b)science content to support the student through the research experience. The tutor will (a) engage in one-on-one discussions (one to two times a week) with the student to cement their understanding of the research topic, (b) help the student with writing the research paper and poster presentation.

The total duration of the Capstone Research Learning modules is 10 Months. The final research paper and poster presentation may take an additional 3 weeks, depending on the students’ prior scientific writing experience.
